When staffing agencies begin the recruiting process the question that seems to come up time and time again is should you use clinicians that have no experience in recruiting to hire your staff? I found that recruiting is a learned process and can be achieved. Clinicians have an advantage that they are familiar with terminology and the industry. This works to the advantage of medical staffing agencies. We find that many medical staffing agencies are begun by clinicians. Those clinicians are at times wearing dual hats, both as marketers and recruiters. Experience as a clinician within the area you plan on recruiting is much more important than experience as a recruiter. It is easy to have a clinician that is a nurse, recruit a nurse to fill opposition and speak about hourly rates and expectations. Recruiting seems to be fundamental in the medical staffing industry, yet many staffing agencies hire non-clinical personnel to look for clinical candidates. Depending on the experience of the recruiter this can be either a good match or not. As a staffing agency you will have to commit yourself especially if you are a small medical staffing agency and you are planning on wearing many hats. The process of recruiting is like a giant chess game, many pieces dictate the game and many possible moves. Its a dynamic process that is constantly evolving and changing. You will need to be aware of those changes and be willing to adopt a constant changing site. Finding nurses take a little more work and it can be accomplished. A little trick I learned is to call a hospital, usually the opposite shift you are looking to staff, simply ask the nurses if there is anybody interested in covering a shift. Don't offer them a job directly, but simply ask if anybody is interested, there are many little tricks but they do work.
